Attracting Candidates

Attracting Candidates

Vacant positions will be advertised internally in support of the Company’s commitment to employee career development and advancement. Vacancies will be placed on the intranet for a period of two weeks to enable employee accessibility. The Manager with the vacancy has the responsibility to develop and distribute their job advertisement.

Where it is considered necessary to go external, the position will be advertised simultaneously. Sometimes, there may not be a need to advertise the position. An example of this would be where a directed move has been made and a successor has been identified to step into a key role. In such cases, the Finance & Administration Manager will be involved in the process to ensure that a smooth handover of role occurs.

There are a variety of methods Company uses to attract candidates that are in addition to internal promotion / lateral moves. The option chosen by the Manager will depend on the type of position being offered, the time to fill it and available budget.

The methods Company uses are:

Employee Referrals

You can earn cash for referring someone who is hired by Company. To participate, complete the Employee Referral Form, attach the resume of the person you’re referring, and send the form and resume to the Manager Operations. Keep in mind that to qualify for a referral bonus, you’ll need to meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are the first to refer the candidate, before someone else refers the candidate and before he or she applies directly.
  • The person you refer is hired and successfully completes probation.
  • You are still with Company when the new employee successfully completes probation.

If the person you refer is not hired for a current opening, your candidate’s resume will remain on file for three months. If the candidate is hired within that three-month period and the other qualifications listed above are met, you will receive a referral bonus.

The amount of your bonus will be $1,000 for a regular fulltime employee. The bonuses are subject to applicable taxes.

All permanent employees are eligible to earn referral bonuses except:

  • Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Offer, Chief Financial Officer, Information Manager, Manager Operations.
  • Managers hiring employees who report to them.

You can earn a bonus for referring any candidate for any permanent fulltime position, except:

  • candidates who have already applied for the job,
  • employees transferring from one of our subsidiaries
  • former employees who left Company within the last year,
  • contractors and temporaries who transition to regular employment.

Direct Advertising
Newspapers Company will, in future, use newspapers as a medium for our recruitment vacancies.

When this occurs, the Manager Operations will work with the Manager and a specialist agency for newspaper advertisements to ensure the design and look appropriately represents our company. Larger advertisements, called display ads, are more expensive because of the greater readership however some positions only require a line advertisement i.e. advertisement with no logos, colour or graphics. It is important that the content of the advertisement is well thought out and constructed to meet the requirements of the position.

Direct Advertising - On Line
Company will, in future, register with on line job boards for our recruitment vacancies.

Recruitment Agencies
Please refer to the section on the Use of Recruitment Agencies.

Executive Search Firms
Company may engage an executive search firm to source candidates for Senior Management/Director positions. An executive search firm can only be engaged with the approval of the Chief Executive Officer.

Educational Institutions
As a more effective option, the placement of advertisements at appropriate educational institutions can be a valuable source of candidates for junior positions within Company. You need to take into account vacation times as this will have an impact on the number of applications.

Professional Associations
Company may look to Professional Associations as a good source of candidates if the position would suit candidates in a particular occupation. The advertisement would generally be placed in the the member journal. The time between placement and publication of the journal could be as long as 2-3 months so the urgency to fill position needs to be considered. Some Professional Associations may place the advertisement on their website which can be a more efficient alternative.

As with most recruitment issues, you cannot mention age, sex, race, religion, politics, sexual preference, health or the like in any advertisement. Please refer to our tips and guidelines for writing effective advertisements.
