Interviews

Interviews

To ensure a fair and consistent process, all suitable applicants for a position should be interviewed. The questions asked and format followed should be no different for internal applicants.

The most effective form of interviewing is behavioural interviewing. This is where you ask questions that demonstrate how the candidate has performed using real examples from their work, education or personal history (which can also be validated through the Reference Checking process). This form of interviewing works on the premise that past behaviour is a good indication of future behaviour.

The interview guide may be developed by the Manager and/or the Finance/Administration Manager as appropriate. It should follow the outline as per the sample interview guide.

The questions should also be divided up into competencies (skills/behaviours) that you wish to examine as defined in the position description. This could include candidate’s leadership skills, technical skills, ethics, project management skills, follow through, eye for detail, etc. You may also factor the business plan goals which will also shape the skills that need to be brought into the organisation. Our database of questions may assist you when developing an interview guide.

At the completion of all the interviews it is important that a consistent process be applied in reviewing the interview guides to ensure that the most appropriate candidate is selected. All Managers are required to review the Do’s and Don’ts of Interviewing to ensure a fair and consistent process is applied.

Company follows these simple rules when interviewing:

  1. If it is not job related don’t ask
  2. If you can’t ask the same question of each candidate don’t ask it
  3. Don’t make assumptions about sensitive areas. You can easily assume the wrong information and discriminate. If in doubt seek advice.

As with most recruitment issues, you cannot ask about age, sex, race, religion, politics, sexual preference, health, marital status or the like in your interview. The Finance/Administration Manager is available to assist you during the interview process.

Unless unsuccessful candidates have provided consent for Company to keep their details, all such material shall be destroyed within 24 hours of the successful candidate accepting the position with Company.
