Reference, Police, Insolvency and Qualification Checks

Reference, Police, Insolvency and Qualification Checks

It is the policy of Company that all employees complete a reference, police and insolvency check as part of the recruitment process. This policy ensures that we identify and minimise any potential risk to the company.

Reference Checks
It is the policy of Company not to employ any candidate until a minimum of two relevant reference checks have been completed by either the Finance & Administration Manager or the Recruitment Agency. One reference check will only be required where the candidate is a current employee. You should verify that the candidate has given permission by checking that they have signed their completed Application Form.

Certificates of Service issued by other companies are not considered references. They simply acknowledge a person’s tenure and position.

Reference checks are conducted using our sample template. Additional questions may be included to verify information attained in the interview and testing process.

Police Checks
All employees are also required to undergo an Australian Federal Police check. A police check will ascertain whether the candidate has had any criminal convictions within the previous 10 years (or five years for offences committed as a minor). Police checks forms can be accessed through the Federal Police website at http://www.afp.gov.au/raw/forms/Crimhistory/Crim01.pdf.

You should print the Criminal History Character Check Form and issue to the candidate to complete, ensuring that the Terms and Conditions are read carefully. You should check each form once completed and then forward to the Australian Federal Police.

Police checks can take 14 days to process once the completed forms are received by the Australian Federal Police.

Insolvency Checks
Insolvency checks through the National Personal Insolvency Index (NPII) can provide information as to whether a candidate has or has had any personal bankruptcy and insolvency in Australia.

NPII is a register of all personal bankruptcies and insolvency"s in Australia. It is maintained by the Insolvency & Trustee Service Australia (ITSA), a division of the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department. NPII includes current and historical information on all stages of insolvency, including creditor"s petitions, Part X agreements and bankruptcy. All entries on the Index are publicly available and satisfy privacy requirements where applicable.

You must complete a insolvency Check on all employees.

Qualification Checks
Some roles at Company require that the incumbent has successfully completed relevant qualifications to enable them to legally perform their role. Examples of these roles include Company Accountant, Financial Controller and all Directors.

The qualifications listed on the CV of applicants for such roles should be verified. Our preferred supplier, Reference Check Pty Ltd communicates with a network of educational bodies worldwide and can verify qualifications within 48 hours.

Unless unsuccessful candidates have provided consent for Company to keep their reference, police, insolvency or qualification checks, all such material shall be destroyed within 24 hours of the successful candidate accepting the position with Company.
